PROFILE OF LEE MORGAN
|
１９３８年７月１０日、ペンシルヴァニア州ピッツバーグ生れ。
１５才で自分のバンドを持ちダンス・ホールなどで演奏した。
その後ピッツバーグを訪れた有名ミュージシャンのアート・ブレイキーや
ディジー・ガレスピーなどと共演し、その輝かしい演奏が注目されました。
５６年にアート・ブレイキー、その後ディジー・ガレスピー楽団に入団します。
１８才のデビューアルバムがいきなりリーダー作品という真の天才少年でした。
兄貴分がハンク・モブレイとベニー・ゴルソンです。
クリフォード・ブラウンの再来かとも言われましたが、私はちょっと違うと思います。
いかにもツッパリ不良少年という感じで、なんかアブナイ雰囲気が漂っていましたね。
当然ながら麻薬中毒になり一時期低迷しました。
ジャズ・メッセンジャーズで物凄い人気となり、さらにサイドワインダーの大ヒットで、
どれだけ威勢が良かったのか想像がつくというものです。
鼻高々で、肩で風を切って歩いていたでしょうね。若いから。
お陰でその後はアッチコッチとふらついて腰のすわらない時期もありました。
そんなわけで後半は演奏の方も当たり外れも大きくなりましたが、それでもキラッと輝くところはさすがで、
一瞬に生きるジャズの魅力が一杯です。
全盛期は１５００番台からジャズ・メッセンジャーズまでというところが一般的な評価ですが、好きな人には全然関係ありません。
女性にも大モテだったらしく、それが原因で非業の死を遂げることになりました。
１９７２年２月１９日、ところはニューヨークのジャズ・クラブ：「スラッグス」で事件が起きました。
三角関係のもつれで、嫉妬に狂ったエレンさん（奥さんと愛人の２説がある）に拳銃で撃たれて亡くなります。
享年３３才、あの時代と共に生きたジャズの一ページを見事に飾った人生でした。
